Research done by Oregon State University Extension Service shows that "simply by aerating your lawn you can use 20-30% less water." Aeration can improve the efficacy of other lawn maintenance products like fertilizer and grass seed.

Aeration is a process of removing plugs or "cores" from a lawn to create passageways in the soil. These passages transport oxygen, water and nutrients and support the lawn's ecosystem.​​
